Excerpt from JCYC Up Close Winter 2018 Chibi Chan Too officially launched its first school year, welcoming new preschoolers on October 2, 2017 at the new site located in the renovated Booker T. Washington Community Service Center (BTWCSC)! The opening of JCYC’s second Chibi Chan Preschool is the result of the tremendous success of the original child care program, which was founded in 1989 by JCYC’s Deputy Director of Programs, Julie Matsueda. The new school is being led by Child Development Director Shana Kanzaki and new Site Director and 14-year JCYC veteran, Jennifer Yip. The teachers at the new site include Christina Fang, Amanda Rica, Scott Shintaku, Karina Jong and Michelle Cannon. JCYC is incredibly grateful to be a part of the new Booker T. Washington Community Service Center.  The BTWCSC celebrated its grand re-opening on October 27th with a fabulous dedication attended by the late Mayor Edwin Lee along with Supervisor London Breed. With Chibi Chan Too in full gear and already well into its Winter Program, the students have been introduced to Chibi Chan’s project-approach curriculum. Students are currently focusing on “pasta and how it ties into family” this year. This theme was selected based on the students’ interest and enthusiasm around this topic. According to Kanzaki, “the younger class was really excited to take a field trip to Trader Joe’s. They explored the different types of pasta, including the fresh pasta in the refrigerator section and the packaged pasta on the shelf. They even brought some to bring back to the classroom.” In addition to Chibi Chan Too’s child care facility, BTWCSC houses academic and career services for youth and adults, a full size gymnasium, mental health support programs, media training and affordable housing.
