Excerpt from JCYC Up Close Summer 2017 JCYC is gearing up for the grand opening of the new Chibi Chan Too site at the newly renovated Booker T. Washington Community Service Center (BTWCSC)! The opening of JCYC’s second Chibi Chan Preschool (CCP) is the result of the tremendous success of the original child care program which was founded by JCYC Deputy Director Julie Matsueda in 1989 and is currently led by Director Shana Kanzaki. In recent years, the demand for Chibi Chan has far exceeded the schools capacity. According to Kanzaki, “expanding our preschool facility has always been in the back of our minds”. She adds that this opportunity came about through conversations between JCYC’s Executive Director, Jon Osaki, and BTWCSC Executive Director, Patricia Scott. The BTWCSC has a decadeslong history of supporting and partnering with the Japantown community in San Francisco’s Western Addition, and this shared spirit was the foundation for this new collaboration. The new site will allow Chibi Chan Too to serve an additional 36 children, with one classroom for two to three year-olds, and another for three to five year-olds. Chibi Chan Too is excited to be a key part of the new BTWCSC, which will include a mixed-use space not only for Chibi Chan Too, but also 50 units of affordable housing, as well as services for youth and adults. As a complement to BTWCSC’s mission, Chibi Chan Too will bring its project-approach curriculum to the new site. “We want Chibi Chan Too to be a true replication of Chibi Chan Preschool since its model is so successful in giving children the foundation they need for their future learning and kindergarten readiness,” says Kanzaki. A key part of this plan was the decision to promote Chibi Chan Preschool’s 14-year veteran, Jennifer Yip, to be Chibi Chan Too’s Site Director. The expansion will also reassign current Associate Director Lisa Ma to serve as Site Director for the original Chibi Chan, which will allow Kanzaki to oversee both sites. The organization is thrilled about promoting Yip and Ma and is another example of JCYC’s focus on leadership development and upwardmobility for its staff. The enrollment for Chibi Chan Too is already full and interested families should request a place on the waiting list as soon as possible.
