Excerpt from JCYC Up Close Winter 2018 JCYC is expanding its youth services south of San Francisco with a new substance use prevention partnership in San Mateo County. Along with the Pacifica Prevention Partnership (PPP), JCYC was recently awarded a contract to provide prevention services to the communities of Pacifica and Daly City. With the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) still a critical issue among youth in the Bay Area, JCYC is eager to lend the organization’s decades of experience to communities beyond San Francisco. JCYC will collaborate with the PPP to connect with key stakeholders and get familiar with the specific alcohol, tobacco and other drugs affecting these communities. PPP formed in 2005 in response to an alcohol-related accident that took the lives of Pacifica teens. Its efforts are focused on organizing the community around reducing youth access to alcohol. The partnership also includes Jefferson Union High School District, Asian American Recovery Services, and Youth Leadership Institute.  During the first six months of the program, JCYC and PPP will develop and facilitate youth coalitions with the goal of mitigating the use and abuse of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs. Along with PPP, JCYC will conduct community education presentations, participate in the San Mateo County Prevention Training Academy, create and maintain a social media presence around prevention issues, and build a network of other organizations, schools and individuals. PPP will concentrate its efforts in the City of Pacifica, while JCYC will focus on Daly City and Colma. With a start date on January 1, 2018, JCYC is busy building partnerships with Thomas R. Pollicita Middle School and Jefferson High School in Daly City. The organization is excited for this opportunity to make a difference in these communities.
