Excerpt from JCYC Up Close Spring 2018 JCYC’s annual Tomodachi Summer & Teen Program is starting back up on June 11th! This nine-week full day program will run through August 10th, and provide the Bay Area’s children and youth with the opportunity to build new friendships, cultivate new interests, and engage in fun and challenging experiences to support their personal growth. The program operates Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Note: Program daily activities begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at approximately 3:00 p.m.). Broken up into two programs, the “Tomodachi Summer Program” serves children entering kindergarten through sixth grade. The Summer Program offers interest-based club options, field trips and cultural enrichment activities, which include clay making, sports, cooking and STEM activities, visiting the California Academy of Sciences and celebrating Japanese culture through Hina Matsuri (Girl’s Day Festival). The “Tomodachi Summer Teen Program” focuses on middle school aged youth and includes recreational activities, such as camping and deep sea fishing. Participants in the Teen Program will also develop their leadership skills by serving as counselors-in- training for the Tomodachi children. Last year, the Teen Program helped to act out the famous Japanese folk story of Hanasaka Jiisan (meaning “old man who made flowers blossom”) for the younger campers. The 2017 Tomodachi Summer & Teen Program served nearly 130 campers and 30 teens each week, and we are looking forward to another fun, eventful and engaging Summer ahead.
