Excerpt from JCYC Up Close Spring 2019 On Friday, April 17th, a special celebration was held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of JCYC’s Chibi Chan Preschool. Former Chibi Chan participants and parents gathered together to reconnect and express their gratitude to the stellar Chibi Chan staff. Chibi Chan was founded in 1989 by current JCYC Deputy Director Julie Matsueda. She and former Executive Director Jeff Mori recognized the need for additional quality, affordable care for working families in San Francisco. The original site was established at Pine Methodist Church in San Francisco’s Richmond District. Chibi Chan operated at the church until 2001 when JCYC entered into a partnership to relocate the program to the newly renovated multi-use Rose Court facility. Chibi Chan has enjoyed tremendous success since moving to Rose Court. The childcare portion of the facility was specifically designed for pre- school children and offers participants a beautiful space to learn and grow. Since moving to Rose Court, Shana Kanzaki has overseen the program, and along with her team of outstanding teachers, turned Chibi Chan into one of the most sought after childcare programs in all of San Francisco. While JCYC has entertained the idea of expanding the program, it wasn’t until 2017 that the right partnership came about to add an additional location. Chibi Chan Too is located at the recently renovated Booker T. Washington Community Service Center and has been a success from day one. JCYC Board Chair and Chibi Chan parent Angus MacDonald remarked, “I can’t believe Chibi Chan is already 30 years old! My son, Owen, thoroughly enjoyed his three years at Chibi, and my wife and I are so grateful to the Chibi staff that truly cared for him during these critical years. It was so much fun being part of the 30th anniversary party and reconnecting with the Chibi staff and parents.” To download a complete version of JCYC Up Close Spring 2019, click here.
