July 15, 2020 Chibi Chan Preschool and Chibi Chan Too have reopened its doors! After two months of delivering virtual classroom activities to their children, while we were all sheltered-in-place, Chibi Chan has responded to the urgent need for essential workers and other families to have child care. Chibi Chan Preschool’s Pine Street location was the first to reopen (on May 26th). Chibi Chan reopened with shortened modified operating hours, and staff began implementing new policies and procedures ensuring the health and safety of everyone. Because all staff are now required to wear a face mask or covering throughout the school day, photos were sent to families of teachers wearing a mask and without. Families were encouraged to share these photos with their children to help prepare them and normalize this new change at school. Teachers have been sharing stories and exchanging conversations about why we wear masks to further ease this big transition for Chibi Chan’s children and their families. Chibi Chan’s Management Team currently conducts “Health and Check-In Screenings” on each child before entering school. These screenings include applying hand sanitizer to both the adult and child, taking and documenting each child's temperature with a no-touch thermometer, collecting the child's personal belongings in their own bags, sanitizing the bottom of children's shoes, and finally, washing hands before entering the classroom. Since the San Francisco Department of Public Health Order states that child care facilities must operate with a stationary group of no more than 12 children, Chibi Chan has redesigned three out of five of its classrooms to accommodate two separated groups. Chibi Chan's Pine street location has added the Rocketships to the Astronaut Class and Chibi Chan Too's location has added the Hammerhead Sharks to the Tiger Sharks Class. Chibi Chan has also upgraded its facilities to protect their children including the installation of automatic flushing toilets in the children's bathrooms and automatic sinks throughout the entire school. Chibi Chan also installed plexi-glass dividers to separate the children at the tables. Each child has their own designated seating space for lunch and table top activities, as well as a personalized box of art supplies. Chibi Chan's teachers have stepped up to ensure their children are continuing to develop their minds. Their resilience and ability to adapt back-and-forth from classroom to virtual learning activities is praiseworthy. We are incredibly proud of our Chibi Chan crew for their hard and thoughtful work in getting the school ready and in compliance with the latest safety guidelines.
