Excerpt from JCYC Up Close Summer 2019 On June 1st, JCYC hosted a special private screening of JCYC Executive Director, Jon Osaki’s award-winning documentary film ALTERNATIVE FACTS: The Lies of Executive Order 9066. The screening was held at the AMC Kabuki theater in Japantown and the event was emceed by Bay Area media icon and long-time JCYC friend Wendy Tokuda.  Jon’s initial interest in film grew from his desire to visually share the stories of JCYC. Over the past few years, he has had films screened at film festivals and community events across the country. As a filmmaker, Jon views this genre as the next step in his lifelong pursuit of social justice and equity. ALTERNATIVE FACTS, which is currently being screened across the country, sheds light on the false information and political influences that led to the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans. The film exposes the lies used to justify the decision and the cover-up that went all the way to the United States Su-preme Court. ALTERNATIVE FACTS also examines the parallels to the current climate of fear, targeting of immigrant communities, and similar attempts to abuse the powers of the government. Jon’s goal for ALTERNATIVE FACTS is to expose the true events and influences behind the WWII incarceration of Japanese Americans to stimulate a truly informed public debate about how this country treats minority and religious groups today. He hopes to illustrate the dire consequences of allowing fear, politics, and misguided rhetoric towards targeted groups to drive decisions about public policy.  Following the film, Wendy Tokuda moderated a discussion panel which included Jon Osaki, attorney Don Tamaki and JCYC staff member Joseph Tsuboi. Don Tamaki was a member of the Coram Nobis Legal team, which re-opened the wartime case of Fred Korematsu and ultimately was successful in getting his conviction set aside. Don is featured in ALTERNATIVE FACTS and served as a key advisor on the film’s content. While still in college, Joseph interviewed and provided narration for the film. All of us at JCYC are extremely grateful for the tremendous support of the organization’s donors and are pleased to have the opportunity to meet and share Jon’s film with those who attended.
