Excerpt from JCYC Up Close Winter 2020 As JCYC gears up for our 50th Anniversary celebration in August 2020, we are excited to feature our next “Where Are They Now” alumni profile – Kaori Ikeda Chun! Kaori grew up at JCYC, starting as a child participant in JCYC’s Summer Daycamp from 1979-1983 into her teenage years, where she participated in JCYC’s Teen Group in 1984-85 and as a Counselor in 1986. JCYC was like a second home to Kaori. She always looked forward to climbing up the steep steps to hang out with her friends in the gym, play pool in the office, and take care of her child participants during her time as a Counselor. It was a fun, safe, and welcoming environment, and she attributes that to JCYC’s Executive Team and Counselors at that time. They were supportive, accepting, and let the campers be themselves. At the same time, they also guided the campers with positive, fun, and energetic attitudes. It was critical to have those types of roles models during those developmental years. Even when Kaori was not a participant in the Summer Daycamp, she felt that she could stop by anytime and was always welcomed by the staff, which was very comforting for a child growing up in the city. It gave Kaori a strong sense of community and she learned the importance of helping each other out.   Following Kaori’s time as a JCYC Counselor, she went on to study Graphic and New Media Design at the Art Center College of Design in Southern California. She now currently works on User Experience and is leading teams on the design of how users engage and interact with web and mobile apps. She has had the opportunity to work at a design agency in New York and then a start-up in Asia (Hong Kong and Shanghai) from 1998-2003. Since returning to her hometown of San Francisco, she has held roles at Walmart Labs and JPMorgan Chase, and is currently working at RingCentral, a global cloud communications provider. Kaori and her husband are living in San Francisco, and have two boys, who are 9 and 13 years old. Her boys are very active with sports, scouts, and piano, and she takes on volunteering roles for their many activities, like managing their basketball teams and supporting school events. This keeps Kaori very busy! JCYC gave Kaori some of the best experiences of her childhood, which helped Kaori Kaori in JCYC Teen Group develop a positive outlook and open perspective in life. It has also impacted her adult life because she knows JCYC is a trusted organization that holds the best intentions. Kaori came full circle by serving on JCYC’s Board of Directors from 1996-1998, and both of her sons attended Chibi Chan Preschool – 2003-2007 and 2012-2015. Kaori is now a member of JCYC’s 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, and is acting in an advisory role on the graphic design of our JCYC 50th marketing materials and is helping us connect with many JCYC alums, who will hopefully join our celebration at San Francisco City Hall on Saturday, August 22, 2020. Kaori is very excited that JCYC’s 50th will be held at San Francisco City Hall and to see how much JCYC has grown to be able hold such a grand event. Of course, she is really looking forward to seeing old friends, reminiscing about all the good memories, and doing a little dancing across the decades with the 70s, 80s, 90s, and modern day themed areas. We will do our best to include your story in our lineup of quarterly alumni profile features!  To download a complete version of JCYC Up Close Winter 2020, click here.
