Japantown Youth Leaders

The Japantown Youth Leaders (JYL) program develops leadership skills and supports the personal growth of each participant. The program is comprised of a Youth Leadership Council and a summer youth leadership team.

The Youth Leadership Council members meet weekly during the school year, participating in leadership training, personal growth and recreational activities and planning community service projects. Trainings focus on group facilitation, public speaking and conflict resolution. Personal development workshops focus on improving communication and decision-making skills, postsecondary education opportunities, financial aid opportunities, and dating violence prevention.

Youth summer leadership team members serve as leaders for JCYC’s Tomodachi Summer Program. Under the supervision of adults, team members escort their group of children out on daily activities for a nine-week period. Youth plan weekly activities, monitor group budgets, and participate in cross-training sessions.
